If you are writing a letter of recommendation . . .

Dear colleague,

As part of the application process for full membership in AAR, each applicant must have two current Member agents submit recommendations. If a colleague has asked you to recommend then for AAR membership, please read this note before you write yours.

If you are recommending a colleague for AAR membership:
  • The agent must have a track record in the selling of rights to literary or dramatic properties.

In the literary branch, an applicant must have been principally responsible for executed agreements concerning the grant of publication, translation or performance rights in ten or more different literary properties during the 18 months preceding the application.

In the dramatic branch, an applicant must have been principally responsible for the grant of rights for at least five stage productions before live audiences in First Class, Off Broadway, LORT or New York City major institutional theaters during the two years preceding the application. At least one such grant must have used either the Approved Production Contract of the Dramatists Guild of America or have been for production Off Broadway in New York City. Film or television performance contracts are considered.

  • The agent must have demonstrated ethical standards in their work, as set forth in the AAR Canon of Ethics.

  • Include any other information the Board may wish to take into account, such as other professional involvements or particular achievements.
Your recommendation will accompany the agent's formal application to a review by the Membership committee and to the Board of Directors, who will consider approval.
AAR By-Laws contain complete regulations on applications and requirements.

We at AAR appreciate your taking the time to consider your colleagues qualifications and to write us with your recommendation. You may hear from the Membership committee or the Board if they have any further questions.

Email me or the chair of the Membership committee if you need to know anything further.

Sincerely,

            Jody Klein
            Administrative Secretary
